On the heels of a New York Times report showing the president has paid less in federal income taxes than most hard-working Badger State families, Opportunity Wisconsin will convene its steering committee for a virtual conversation with U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin on THURSDAY, October 1, at 6:30 PM CT to discuss the state of Wisconsin’s economy under President Trump.“
Once again, President Trump demonstrates there are two sets of rules when he's in charge — one for him and his millionaire friends and one for everyone else,” said Becca Cooke, Eau Claire entrepreneur, Executive Director of Red Letter Grant, and Opportunity Wisconsin steering committee member. “Families across the Badger State are working hard and paying their fair share of taxes, especially during this time of crisis. But President Trump continues taking advantage of a rigged tax system, that his economic policies like the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act made even more unfair. As the cost of health care, retirement, food, and education continue to rise, tax rates for people like President Trump have rarely been lower.
Wisconsinites literally can't afford President Trump's failed leadership.”President Trump’s economic policies have actively hurt Wisconsin by putting billionaires and big corporations first, and leaving working and middle-class people behind. Between rising housing costs, wages not keeping up with the cost of living, and nearly non-existent benefits, many in the Badger State are just barely getting by.
In fact, during the same year President Trump paid only $750 in federal income taxes, he signed into law the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which by 2027 will give 83% of the benefits to the top 1%. In Wisconsin, residents with the lowest incomes are expected to pay more in taxes because of the Trump Tax, while the wealthiest 1% of residents can expect almost $8,000 in savings.
After an update from Senator Baldwin on how President Trump’s economic agenda is hurting Wisconsinites, and what she’s doing to fight back, members of the steering committee will share perspectives from their communities around the state and will be available for questions from the media. The group also plans to discuss the continued economic and public health impact of COVID-19.
