New Effort Launches to Hold Wisconsin Reps. Steil, Van Orden Accountable on Vote to Cut Funding for Veterans, Health Care, and Food

Elected officials should fight for Wisconsin workers and their families, not the wealthy and big corporations—that’s the message of a new campaign aiming to hold Wisconsin Reps. Bryan Steil and Derrick Van Orden accountable for their votes and policies in Congress. 

Opportunity Wisconsin, an issue advocacy organization, announced the launch of their grassroots campaign on Tuesday. Starting this week, the group plans to hold events in both Wisconsin’s first congressional district in southeastern Wisconsin, represented by Steil, and the state’s third district in western and southwestern Wisconsin, represented by Van Orden.

Advocacy group 'Opportunity Wisconsin' touts Infrastructure Law

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Opportunity Wisconsin representatives joined local elected officials at Riverside Park Tuesday to announce the distribution of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law dollars to Wisconsin.

They say the state can expect $5.2 billion for highways and $225 million for bridges over 5 years. In addition, Wisconsin should see $592 million over five years to improve public transportation.

Advocates unpack the details in new climate, health and tax law

In the two weeks since President Joe Biden signed a massive bill that incorporates health care, climate and tax measures into law, the legislation’s supporters have been working to convey its details to the public.

“Health care lies at the heart of the Inflation Reduction Act,” said Meghan Roh, program director for Opportunity Wisconsin, one of the advocacy groups that organized the news conference. “And the provisions to reduce costs and expand care are overwhelmingly popular with Wisconsinites across the political spectrum.”

Internet For All Initiative To Bring Access To 1.5M

The future of internet infrastructure in Wisconsin was up for discussion today. State Senator Jeff Smith joined speakers and community members at the SHIFT coffee house in Eau Claire for a round table on the ‘Internet for All’ initiative. As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill, the ‘initiative’ is set to bring free or reduced cost internet to 1.5 million people in Wisconsin. Opportunity Wisconsin, the group organizing the roundtable, said that in a post pandemic world, it’s essential to have internet access.

Madison mayor joins Wisconsin groups to highlight Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

The Pandemic Has Increased Worker Value Among Employers, but Help Still Needed to Address Shortage

Speakers gathered at an event Thursday in Eau Claire to discuss the current situation, said a growing number of businesses in the city are raising pay and offering other benefits to bring in new employees and retain existing ones. The event was put on by the group Opportunity Wisconsin, which has criticized Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Oshkosh) for supporting a law that rewards companies that ship Wisconsin jobs to foreign nations.

"Pizza for a poke, slice for a shot, whatever you want to call it," said Ian's partner and manager, Ryan Donovan. 

The first 100 people who show their COVID-19 vaccination card at the East Juneau Ave. location  received a free slice.
